Jeanette's visit -Blogging Friends

I had a very nice visit yesterday with Jeanette and Heidi.Jeanette didn't get to bring her little girl Sydney with her this time but I hope to get to meet her too sometime.I think Heidi needs to let Henry model.He is so handsome and loves having his picture taken.

I'm enjoying making so many new friends because of Ruby's extra chromosome :)

Here are some pics of Ruby getting her bath.She absolutely loves getting a bath!She splashes and splashes,getting everything around her soaking wet!I enjoy every minute of it!I'm so happy that she is able to sit up on her own and play in the water.

She has two new bottom front teeth that I would like to get a picture of but she just wont let me:)

Sunday Verse

I have always loved this hymn and it means even more to me this week than ever before.I find comfort in knowing that even though family and friends may turn on you and you are so overwhelmed, that my wondrous God knows the purpose and why of everything and all I need to do is trust in Him.
Farther Along
Tempted and tried,
we're oft made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long,
While there are others living about us,
Never molested, though in the wrong.

Refrain:
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.
When death has come and taken our loved ones,
It leaves our home so lonely and drear,
Then do we wonder why others prosper
Living so wicked year after year.

Refrain:
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.
Faithful til death, said our loving
Master A few more days to labor and wait,
Toils of the road will then seem as nothing
As we sweep through the beautiful gate.
Refrain:
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.
When we see Jesus, coming in glory,
When He comes from His home in the sky,
Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion,
We'll understand it all by and by.
Refrain:
Farther along we'll know all about it,
Farther along we'll understand why;
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it all by and by.

My Birthday Gift

Today is my birthday and on this day last year is when I got to bring Ruby home from the hospital ,after her birth and two week stay in the NICU.I don't think I will ever receive a more wonderful birthday gift.

We had been told she would have to stay in the NICU until she was feeding well, which could take weeks and weeks, and if she couldn't eat enough she might have to have a feeding tube placed in her stomach.Well,my wonderful husband said what if you are giving her feedings too close together and she isn't hungry enough at each feeding.The doctor listened and changed her to demand feeding,as soon as they did that Ruby started eating wonderfully every 4 hours!We got to bring her home after 24 hours of feeding well.

When Ruby was born and we found out she had Down syndrome I felt like I had aged many years in just a few minutes,when she turned six months old it seemed like it had been an eternity,now at one year it seems that it passed quickly.I have come to know her and accept her Dx,she has changed so many things in me.What a perfect gift God gave me!

I read this following quote in an old christian devotional book, written by,Jessie Rice Sandberg ,from the 1960's.I think she said it perfectly:

" Trouble is a strange thing.It arrives in dark robes of despair and uncertainty,and not until it is already behind us do we recognize that our unwelcome intruder has been God's love and mercy in disguise.How often the Lord uses difficulty to give us"the best" in place of "the good."

Thank you my precious Ruby.

Special Needs at VBS

I met a wonderful little girl last week when I helped out with Vacation Bible School at the church I attend.This little girl is 5 years old and has autism.I think because of Ruby I was drawn to this little girl who sat and rocked and sang to herself most of the time.One night I handed out a bag of crayons and pictures to color to each child and she started throwing her crayons in the floor ,so I went and sat next to her and said "Will you help me pick up the crayons?" She did help and then I started showing her the crayons and taking one and coloring, then she would take the color from me and color the page on her own smiling to herself.I then wrote her name for her at the top of the page and to my surprise she started smiling and pointing at each letter and spelling her name which she did several times rocking back and forth and smiling and spelling her name.I said, with a big smile,"You can spell your name!" She smiled even bigger and started humming to herself.
Next we worked on puzzles together and I mistakenly thought she would need my help.Let me just say she is excellent at putting puzzles together and was better at it than some of the typical children in the class.
She brightened my life and I will miss seeing her and hearing her sing to herself and the way she smiled to herself when I talked to her.She was a visitor to our church VBS so I don't know if I will ever see her again.I hope she has a wonderful life,I hope people will see her abilities.

I hope you'll take a minute and watch this video I found.

Balancing the care

Here is a good article in the Dallas/Ft Worth Thrive magazine by Dawn McMullan about how parent's of special needs children balance the care of their child with the needs of their typical children.
