Ruby is learning to walk
Ruby has started standing up and sitting down without holding on to anything,she has even taken a few shuffling steps in the last couple of days,and she bear crawls everywhere.I'm so excited!
When Ruby was born and I heard the statistics of when a child with Down syndrome would walk,I thought that I would work with her and she would be one of those super kids with Down syndrome who walked early.Well,I have worked with her,therapists have worked with her,her siblings have helped her, I'm sure that it was all good for her,but Ruby hasn't decided she would walk yet,she is 2 1/2 years old now,and you know what it doesn't matter one little bit to me if she doesn't walk until she's 3 or 4 or whenever.What matters is that she is doing her best,we are giving her the help and love that she needs and she will walk and run when she's ready.What if she can't walk on her own and needs some type of adaptive device to help her? Well that's o.k. too.I'm so proud of my baby!She brings so much joy to our lives.
Here are some pictures of her standing and a video of her bear crawling.In the video you can see the baby gate I had to prop up against the bookshelf to keep Ruby from pulling all the books off,she LOVES to throw EVERY book off that shelf.I'm so proud she can :)

What is that thing? 31 for 21 day 7
Someone asked me,"What is that thing she's coloring on?"" I like it!"
That is a Magna Doodle . When I first started working with Ruby on scribbling coloring(coloring is a fine motor skill) she kept trying to eat the crayons and she was faster than me.She would have the crayon in her mouth and the tip bitten off before I could grab it away.I decided the Magna Doodle ,that had been a Christmas present to my kids last year, would be perfect for Ruby to learn to color with and would be less mess and no waxy after taste ;) hehe.Ruby has recently decided she would color with crayon and paper with her siblings,without tasting the crayon.She still enjoys the Magna Doodle and I keep it on a bottom shelf of our bookcase so she can use it whenever she wants.
I found the Magna Doodle like the one we have on Amazon and they also had some other really cool versions ,like a travel version called Doodle Pro Tag - Along and one by another company called a Glodoodle .

More Crawling
I'm so excited about Ruby crawling.After working on it for so long I just thought she probably never would crawl and just go straight to walking.She has been army crawling on her belly for a long time, and has even bear crawled a few steps lately,but one day a couple of weeks ago she just decided she would crawl on hands and knees!
It's just so wonderful to see her getting around everywhere and not scrubbing the floor with her belly.A couple of nights after she started crawling I was sitting in our living room, and Ruby had scooted on her belly into our kitchen and then she got up on her hands and knees to crawl and I just started crying.I was so happy!See Ruby can!!

Eye check and other updates
My husband and I took Ruby today to see an opthamologist at our local children's hospital ,her eyesight is fine and she wont have to have her eye's checked again until she turns four.Yeah!While she was having her eyes checked she kept saying,"Hi!" to the opthamologist and saying "see it?" at the different lenses and lights the Dr. was using.The Dr's were very good with Ruby.
Ruby has started cruising along our furniture so I'm hoping to see her start trying to walk on her own soon.Although I'm sure as soon as she is walking she will be getting into even more than she does already! She is really starting to pick up on using more sign language and speaking new words.She's so cute and will sign and say "bath" when I change her diaper,thinking that I'm getting her undressed for a bath. :) She is saying "bite" when she sees any of us with food and loves to try and eat what we are eating, but usually she just chews on the food for a bit then spits it out because she has difficulty swallowing food with much texture without gagging.
We had a great time on our visit to the Zoo on Memorial day,which I posted pictures from on my Wordless Wednesday.A couple of commenter's from that post asked if Ruby liked the Zoo and I wanted to answer that ,yes, Ruby was very good at the zoo even though it was an extremely hot day.My husband and I were exhausted by the end of the day and my husband spent $22.00 and a 20 minute wait,just so we could all ride the train back to the front of the zoo, so we wouldn't have to walk all that way to leave.
Ruby enjoyed all the animals and would wave and say ,"Hi!" to them and she also made growling sounds at them.
While we were there I noticed an older couple and their grown children , one of the young women had Down syndrome.I didn't say anything to them and just observed how sweetly the family members all were to this young woman.I saw them several times while we were walking through the zoo,then while we were sitting down to rest, near the giraffes,this same family came over to look at the giraffes and the mother,who was in a wheelchair,noticed Ruby sitting in her stroller."Look," she said to her daughter who had Ds,that little girl is just like you! At first it didn't appear that the daughter noticed Ruby but then after her mother started asking me questions about Ruby she turned and looked at her and her face just looked so sweet and she said,"Look! She like me ,she like me! I just wanted to hug her! We found out her name was Juliette and she was 39 years old,she looked great by the way ,her mother told me that Ruby would return much love back to us as long as we showed much love to her and that she would be a great blessing to our family.She also told me the best advice that she could give me was to not let Ruby do things now while she's 2 that I don't want her to do when she is 21.I don't know why I didn't think to take a picture of Ruby and Juliette together.I could just kick myself.sigh.Their hair was even the same color!
Thank you for all the well wishes to my son Grady on his college acceptance!

Words
Ruby has started saying a lot of new words recently and last night while I played Pat a Cake with her she started saying ,"roll,roll" and doing the arm motions when I got to the roll em up part. I sang Itsy Bitsy Spider with her and she did the arm motions for the rain and the sun.I almost couldn't finish singing it for her because I started tearing up.

Ruby Can
Ruby has been doing many new things this month!She has been able to push up to sitting for awhile but only tried it occasionally,the past two weeks she has started pushing herself up to sitting daily and many,many times a day!
She has learned the sign for more and enjoys signing more when we blow bubbles for her.
She clearly says,"op" for stop when she doesn't like something, and a few nights ago told me "No!" and then gave me a beautiful smile when I said it was time to go night,night.
And I'm thrilled to say that last night after we put her to bed in her crib ,she pulled herself up to standing and scared my teenage daughter ,(who Ruby shares a room with),by nearly flinging herself over the rail of the bed! My dear husband had to get a wrench out and lower the mattress before we could safely put her back to bed!
I hope all my blogging friends are doing well,I have had a lot of family drama going on with my older children :) and haven't had much time for blog reading.I was able to attend a missions conference at church last week that was truly a blessing to me and came at a perfect time to help me wade through some of the drama.The missionaries brought wonderful messages and also let us know every night after service how much they enjoyed our little Ruby and her "singing" during our congregational singing :)

New Toy
In physical therapy Ruby is working on kneeling to play and standing to play,so I bought her this really cool Vtech Sit to Stand Learning Walker ,it is also great for occupational therapy because of all the activities it has.Ruby loves this toy and tries to pull herself up to stand on it,she has learned to turn the gears and open and close the little door on the barn.Has lots of lights and music!

Ruby's Jazz Hands

i did it

Baby Treadmill -- Kinesiologists Design Tiny Treadmill To Help Balance Baby Steps In Downs Syndrome Infants
Ruby's Physical Therapist has suggested we do treadmill therapy.Below is an article I found on the therapy.What do you think about this?
ScienceDaily () -- Kinesiologsts developed a tiny treadmill to help infants with Downs Syndrome learn to balance themselves earlier. Typically, these children learn how to walk at 24 to 28 months, later than the 12 months for those without Downs. The treadmill exercise, used about 8 minutes a day, helps to reinforce the underlying pattern of coordination in the legs. This repetition helps build core muscles and support the drive to stand up. After the babies take eight to 10 steps without help, they are outfitted with light reflecting markers. The information from these markers is recorded on cameras, revealing gait, speed and width of their steps. Eating and Army Crawling
Ruby has had two vital stimulation sessions with her speech therapist and now she can eat a whole jar of baby food! Before she had the vital stim she wouldn't even eat half a jar of food and now she just loves eating!When Ruby gets her therapy her ST tapes small electrodes to her cheeks and turns on a small device that looks like a handheld video game,then while the electricity is stimulating Ruby's tongue the ST feeds her some baby food.Ruby has tolerated this therapy very well.She has some small red spots on her cheeks when therapy is over but these quickly go away within a few minutes.
Last Tuesday Ruby's physical therapist helped her to crawl on her tummy by putting her hands on Ruby's arms and showing her how to use her arms to pull herself across the floor.Now Ruby is using her legs to push and her arms to pull herself and she is army crawling all over the place!

I have to share this
I have to share this,I was so excited!
I put Ruby down to look at her gym so I get get a few things done and a few minutes later my 7 yr.old daughter came running to get me and said,"Ruby reached up and grabbed the toy!" I went to look and sure enough she had reached up and grabbed the toy above her head and was swinging it.She let go while I was standing there and reached up and grabbed it again! Of course I took some pics. and here they are. Yeehaw! :)
I can't wait to tell the PT tomorrow at Ruby's appointment.

Hard Work
I have still been working with Ruby on reaching up over her body while she is on her back.Today I laid her on my bed on her back and held her favorite toy up over her body.You can tell she wants to grab it so badly.Her body shakes,her eyes get big, and she grabs the front of her shirt with both hands.After a bit I held the toy down close to her hands and she reached out just a little with her right hand and grabbed it.She then lifted her arm straight up over her body and shook the toy back and forth.She did this several times in a row.Each time waiting for me to hold the toy close to her and then grabbing it and extending her arm straight out over her body to shake the toy.She never would use her left hand it just clung to the front of her shirt.I cried tears of joy ,it is exciting to me because I can see how hard she has to work to do this.
Then this evening after I changed her diaper I held the toy up over her but would not put it down close to her chest.I was hoping she would extend her arm out to grab it.Instead she lifted both legs straight up over her and started hitting the toy with her feet! She did this several times in a row! So exciting!
