My baby has Down syndrome

This afternoon Ruby had an OT appointment, when I went up to the door of the therapy clinic a young man,who just happened to have Down syndrome, opened the door for me and Ruby and waved us in with a smile. His mother was busy talking to another lady so I didn't bother her but I sure did want to talk to her.
Well, after Ruby's therapy session I headed across the parking lot to the hardware store to pick up a new toilet seat for our bathroom which my husband is redoing. While I was in there I saw the same young man and his Mom and I just got up the courage and walked over to her and said,"My baby girl has Down syndrome, too." She walked over to me with a smile and looked in the basket at Ruby and she said ,"Oh,I've seen you at the therapy office!" I asked her about her son and how his health had been and how old he was.She was so happy to share all about her 18 year old son with me.She talked to me for probably 30 minutes or more. She told me her son had,had many surgeries for different things and showed me his big scar from his heart surgery. She said the doctors kept telling her, her son would not live and she said he was pretty sick for a long time but after he turned 6 years old he has been very healthy. She said he isn't very verbal and no one can understand what he says but her.She also told me that on his good days he is "six" and on bad days he is "2" but that she wouldn't trade him for anything. While I stood there talking to her every once in awhile he would hug her and give her a kiss on the cheek,so sweet! We had a great talk and she told me I could talk to her anytime. It was good to meet her and I think she needed to talk to me as much as I needed to talk to her:)

Isn't it wonderful to be able to open up and talk so honestly with other moms who have older kids with Down syndrome? That's great that you connected with her. Thanks for sharing.

I love, love, love the connections we are making in the DS community - online and in real life.

And? I love the pics of your Ruby! :)

Loved the story...I believe you talked to her for me too. I haven't found to many people that have a child with Ds that aren't verbal. Jonthan still isn't and is going on 11, I know he has a mid hearing loss but none that would make speech so hard. I too say on good days Jonathanis 4 or 5 on bad 2...yet I'm thankful! So, again thank you for the post, it made my day :)
