Thyroid Function

I got a call from the pediatrician's office today about Ruby's bloodwork. Her levels on her thyroid test were 3.5 which they told me was borderline for low function.I will have to take Ruby back in 6 weeks for another thyroid test.Do any of you have experience with this?I didn't know all the right questions to ask when I was on the phone with the dr.'s office and now I feel a little worried. They did tell me if they need to she will be treated with medication.

I don't know anything about this except I need to know something about it. Sam is going in for his 9 month check up tomorrow and I am going to ask them about checking his thyroid now that I see Ruby getting her's checked. I asked a few months ago and they were like oh you don't need to worry about that until they are much older so I am going to tell them that is not so and they need to check him. Let me know if you find out anything more and I will do the same.

I don't know a whole lot about it except that Jax has been on synthroid (a thyroid med) for almost all of his life. Then they check levels once a year. Its not to big of a deal, at least not yet for us.

Ruby's pediatrician is doing the right thing. The best next step is to have the thyroid tested again in 6 weeks, the doctor will take it from there. If needed, the medication will regulate the thyroid and keep it balanced. Check out this site they have some info re this:

Adam needed to start taking synthroid when he was 1 years old for his thyroid. I don't know all the medical explanation but I believe the medication synthroid is what his thyroid isn't making. This is the only medication that I don't worry about really......there are no side effects it's very safe and since he was 1 he chews it up like candy. I asked his dr. about this and she told me to try a little of one they taste like sugar pill. I do know if gone undetected it can can effect your brain growth along with many other things. So, don't worry and be thankful you have a very wise Dr. that checked it!!! Adam was checked every 6 months until he was 5 years old then it went to yearly. But this winter when we went it was a little off so, we are checking his blood again in May for possible upping his medication. Good luck!! And really don't worry...........

Okay, sorry I wrote that wrong... I meant to say we have had no side effects, If wrong dosage there of course can be. We just have never had any problems and quite a few of Adam's friends with ds are on synthroid and haven't had any problems. ~sorry~ I typed and sent without rereading, guess it's time for bed!!!

I found this website a week & a half ago... this mom seems to have a lot of good information - here is her posting about the thyroid issues her daughter had. I do not think this is a medical website, but after 16 years of having a child with Down syndrome, she seems to have a lot of information she has learned and is sharing! Hope this helps.
